Jesus knew he was about to raise Lazarus. So why did he weep?
We usually think grief is a sign of weak faith. Why would we grieve the loss of a loved one, especially if it means they’re done suffering, even enjoying eternity in heaven? Shouldn’t we focus on the positive and keep it together?
No. Because when we lose someone who matters to us, our love for them has nowhere to go anymore. That’s a hard reality to come to terms with, and grief is a natural part of the process.
Jesus didn’t muscle through grief. He could have skipped the sorrow because he knew the outcome, but he chose to sit in it—to feel the heartbreak and the raw emotion. If he could, you can too.
You don’t need to fight off grief, and you don’t need to carry it by yourself. You can bring everything you feel in the wake of loss to Jesus and know that he’ll be gentle and gracious with you. He’ll bring you to a place of hope and healing with time. Whether you’re grieving a person, a season of life, or the way things used to be, you can always talk to Jesus about it.
Pray: God, meet me in my grief. Give me permission to feel, and remind me that you're close when I’m hurting. Amen.
